About the Radio Play(s) series

Radio Play(s) is like a performed podcast. Co-hosted by literary performer Regie Gibson and composer Guy Mendilow, each “episode” unpacks a timely theme through a collection of stories, whether told through the spoken word, musical segments or theatrically projected sand animation. A continuous score unites each episode, drawing on classical, contemporary and Ottoman Jewish influences and performed by a world-class, multiethnic sextet.

Purpose

Radio Play(s) episodes conjure poignant conversations both within communities and between communities that may not normally converse, exploring the struggles, complexities and nuanced contradictions of being fully human and of seeing others as fully human.

Episode 1: Resistance & Resilience

Radio Play(s) draws on real-world stories to inspire curiousity and conversation. Episode 1 “Resistance & Resilience,” juxtaposes a Black teen’s aspirations in 1980’s Chicago with those of young Hungarian Jews serving the resistance and escaping from a WWII Arrow Cross work camp; A European immigrant’s strain to preserve dignity contrasts heartrending advice from a Black father to his son about growing up in a country stacked against him.

Episode 2: Rail||Road

In episode 2, “Rail||Road,” an Ottoman Jewish couple’s US immigration hinges on legal definitions of their race—and, on court documents, their race shifts from “Turk,” to “Mexican,” “Hebrew” and, finally, “White”; A young Black man wrestles with assumptions about a Chinese-American woman whose ancestor helped build the American railroad alongside his own; Audiences learn of Onesimus, an enslaved New Englander written out of historical records despite saving countless Bostonians by introducing Smallpox inoculation. Together, these stories ask: What is the human cost of immigrating/naturalizing/being born into a legal system premised on the power-story of race? In what ways does the ideological/cultural/political/legal concept of race distort the stories we tell about one another? And what might it take to railroad such distortions? Ultimately, Rail||Road brings to life stories of inward journey, the courage to rail against assumptions that cause us to railroad each other, and of roads to better futures.

Community Conversation

Each episode culminates with a thoughtfully-crafted, participatory, community conversation for which comprehensive conversation guides are prepared.

An extraordinary performance that moved our audiences and continues to resonate with our students. Guy, Regie, and the participating artists truly understand that art is an essential tool in overcoming adversity.
— Matt Cahoon, Director of Cultural Programming, Stockbridge Theatre, Derry NH

Background

Gibson and Mendilow launched Radio Play(s) to address mounting civic and racial tensions compounded by COVID19.  Both view genuine curiosity, together with generous listening inviting honesty, dignity and aliveness, as a way towards greater social health and resilience. Both wonder whether eliciting such curiosity and listening may be among the few actions that serve to engage with current conflicts without further aggravating polarized divisions.

For Gibson and Mendilow, the performing arts offer vital pathways towards curiosity and listening. Both feel that moving artistic experiences can be powerful agents for conversation: A coming together to listen to one another and share our stories to explore who we are and who we wish to be, building an understanding of how others have come to see what they see, believe what they believe and know what they know. Such artistic encounters can provide avenues to explore what is at stake, in human terms.
