This evening includes the world premiere of two new sand story scenes from The Forgotten Kingdom.
Sand Artist Kseniya Simonova developed her sand animation technique by sifting volcanic sand through her hands over a lightboard. During her performances she creates, obliterates and morphs her images to create a flowing narrative.
In the stage production from which the last scene is taken, this sand footage is cut into 24 segments, operator-triggered according to cues in the script/score. Each new section picks up at the exact frame as its predecessor, creating the illusion of a continuous video, enabling projections to synch with live performance despite variations in pacing.
